about
David McLaughlin is a figurative portrait painter, born in the west of Scotland and now based in Dorset. He works in oils and acrylics on wooden panels and canvas in a modern representational style. David prefers to paint his commissions from photographs, concentrating on creating a strong likeness of his subject. He is fascinated by people and his paintings often feature his subjects in isolation on a blocked-out background.
David has a candid, observational style and loves to focus on the human form and how to depict the qualities of flesh, muscle tone and bone structure. He finds inspiration in Pop Art and Expressionism and prefers to use bright, vibrant colour in his portraits. He has been selling his commissions privately for many years.
Artist Statement:
I understand that we as humans are naturally drawn to faces as they hold crucial information about a person's identity, emotion and intentions. I love portraiture because I find faces fascinating, the similarities and the differences, the features that are biological and the lines and scars that have been left by their experiences. Faces tell a story.
